Yoi is an exhibition of works from the Munupi Arts & Crafts Association located along Melville Island’s north-western coastline, north of Darwin. It features paintings by nine Munupi artists.

Yoi is the official catalogue for the homonymous exhibition on display at Saatchi Gallery from 2nd August – 21st September 2024.
The catalogue explores the spirituality of Tiwi Art through the work of nine Manupi artists.
Their works share a common thread: In Tiwi culture, dancing -or ‘yoi’- plays a significant role in life. Narrative dances – a key feature of ritual activity – depict both everyday life and historically significant events. During these dances, the participants paint their bodies with natural ochres, using designs that also appear on the canvases in Yoi.
Contrary to the venture of many Western painters, the finished product invites the viewer to savour and enjoy the movement which led to the artwork’s creation.
