Description
Following surgery for stomach cancer in 1941, Henri Matisse was left bed-bound and could no longer paint or sculpt. With the help of his assistants, he began creating art again. Using scissors, the artist would cut shapes from sheets of paper painted with gouache colours. The seated figure in ‘Blue Nude II’ is similar to several compositions produced by Matisse in the early 1920s, such as the nude figures depicted in his monumental oil painting ‘Le bonheur de Vivre’.
